Sandra F. Berman, 76, of Plainfield died March 29, 2012. Born in Morristown, she moved to Plainfield over 60 years ago.

Mrs. Berman was an executive at Fromm Electric Supply Corporation for many years.
She was a graduate of the Hartridge School and pursued undergraduate studies at Hood College in Frederick, Md., and at Rutgers University.

Slated to be honored this spring at the Founders dinner of Solomon Schechter Day School, East Brunswick, she was president of the Plainfield Regional Hebrew Day School and continued to provide leadership when the school became the Hebrew Academy of Central New Jersey in Perth Amboy. She was the first recipient of the Aishet Chayil Award at Rutgers University’s Chabad House for her leadership in the community, and was a founder of the Central NJ Jewish Home for the Aged, now the Regency Jewish Heritage Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Somerset. She was on the board of the Jewish Horizon newspaper, a predecessor of NJ Jewish News. She was active in the Jewish Federation of Central NJ and the JCC of Central NJ, where she held numerous board positions and was a founding member of the Jewish Community Endowment Foundation. She was a longtime congregant of both Temple Sholom and Congregation Beth Israel in Plainfield and Scotch Plains. She and her husband funded the establishment of the Kosher Halal Kitchen at Mount Holyoke College, which won the Haber award from B’nai B’rith Hillel for bringing Jewish and Muslim students together. She was also a longtime president of Cedar Twig, the only Jewish auxiliary group at Muhlenberg Hospital.

Predeceased by her husband of 45 years, Daniel, and her son, Robert, she is survived by her daughter, Ellen Berman of Woodbridge; a brother, Jules Fromm of North Brunswick; and extended family members Phyllis Berman and Arthur Waskow of Philadelphia; Morissa, Jason, and Yaela Wiser of Somerville, Mass.; Keif Fromm of Hillsborough; Keira Fromm of Chicago; Fred and Katie Sher of Oradell; and Jana Scher and Shirlee Goldstein of North Brunswick.
